During a weekend break to Salou in north east Spain we enjoyed a day visit to the city of Tarragona.
Tarragona is a port city located on the Costa Daurada (Costa Dorada to some!) and is the capital of the Province of Tarragona. Dating back to the 5th century BC the city is steeped in history with ancient ruins and religious buildings to explore.
There are blue flag golden beaches, quaint streets and charming plazas to stroll along. We visited on a Sunday and the place was buzzing with Spanish families enjoying the warm weather and the numerous bars, cafes and restaurants that line the port area and the main squares.
Throughout the week there are regular street markets and during the year the city hosts various festivals and events.
For adventure thrill seekers the popular amusement park of PortAventura is just a short drive away in neighbouring Salou.
Tarragona is also home to a large port, popular with cruise ships as well as the marina Port Tarraco which is exclusively designed for super and mega yachts. Meanwhile the equally attractive Puerto Deportivo de Tarragona is popular with visiting yachts and vessels exploring the Mediterranean.
