Salou

We enjoyed a weekend break in the beautiful resort of Salou on the Costa Daurada in Spain. The city is in the province of Tarragona in Catalonia. We had actually hired a car and drove down from Barcelona, approximately 112km away however Salou’s closest airport is Reus about 10km away.

We stayed at the Belvedere Hotel which is located right next door to PortAventura theme park. We paid just £149 for three nights in March for 2 people on a half board basis. We were a little apprehensive as some of the online reviews said that the food wasn’t all that however we found the food to be fantastic with a great choice on offer. The hotel was also just a 10 minute walk from the seafront and we understand that it has been refurbished since our visit which is good to hear.

As mentioned the hotel was next to PortAventura but unfortunately this was closed during our stay (it wasn’t due to open until the Easter holidays). One of Salou’s other big attractions is the Fountains of the Font lluminosa which are situated along the promenade. These fountains provide wonderful shows of light and water combinations but unfortunately these too were not taking place during our stay! Apparently the shows only take place during the summer months.

However we did get to enjoy the main promenade ‘Passeig Jaume I’ which runs along the seafront adjacent to Llevant Beach, the longest beach in the town. We enjoyed a stroll along the broadwalk which hugs the cliffs around the cap and chilled out on the beautiful beaches.

Salou is definitely worth a visit. Of course if you want to enjoy the main attractions then you will need to visit later in the year however if you fancy a few days of escapism with hot sunny days and less people then earlier in the year is worth considering.
