Quarr Abbey

The beautiful Quarr Abbey is a free attraction on the Isle of White. It is a working Benedictine monastery set in beautiful grounds located just outside of Ryde.

We had taken the number 4 bus from East Cowes and hopped off at Wootton. After enjoying a walk around this beautiful esturary we walked over to Fishbourne, enjoying a pit stop at the Fishbourne Inn before walking along Quarr Lane to the abbey.

A number of monks still live and work at the abbey with their daily life consisting of prayer, work and community life.

The abbey is open to the public and still has regular mass services. There is also a visitors centre, monastery shop, art gallery, farm shop and tea shop with a beautiful garden.

The visitors centre provides information about life in the monestary along with history facts and artifacts.

The monastery shop sells a wide selection of prayer books, candles, rosaries, crucifixes, notebooks, pens and keyrings and the art gallery showcases local art by island based artists.

The farm shop sells a wide range of delicious handmade and locally sourced products, some of which are made with ingredients grown on their very own allotments at the abbey. And of course the tea shop serves delicious lunches and snacks, again all made fresh with locally sourced ingredients.

The abbey is set in beautiful grounds with plenty of walks to enjoy from woodland walks to formal gardens.
