A Carnival Procession, Live Music and Fun Events!
Swanage is a seaside town in Dorset on the South Coast of the UK. In Victorian times the town gained popularity as a holiday retreat for the wealthy. Nowadays Swanage is still a popular holiday destination and every summer it hosts the Swanage Regatta and Carnival, a week of family fun and entertainment.
The Swanage Regatta and Carnival week is classed as the premier carnival on the South Coast and one of the biggest highlights is the carnival procession. Each year they have a theme and the theme for 2017 was ‘Swanage Goes Global’. Over 30 floats, walkers, bands and dancers joined in the 2.5 mile procession around the town with thousands lining the route to cheer and clap them on.

Throughout the week there is FREE live music in the marquee with some fantastic acts performing everything from 60’s & 70’s to country, rock to blues, chart hits to rat pack, there’s definitely something for everyone!

And Masquerade Night sees EHM at the Amphitheatre on Prince Albert Gardens, a night of dance and tunes, one not to miss!
There’s a host of events throughout the week including ‘What’s Not My Line’, where you have to find an item in the participating shop window that is not normally sold by the shop. It’s a lot harder than in sounds, and around 80 shops take part! Other events that take place include a dog show, talent competition, wacky races, crabbing competition, bay swim, fun run, go kart racing and children’s disco.
One of the more popular (and wacky!) is the Wheelbarrow Race where teams of two, in fancy dress, race around the town stopping at various pub stops along the way where they have to have a drink. It’s certainly a pub crawl with a difference!

And the Yard of Ale is another popular event, see how quickly you can down a yard of ale (about two and half pints), apparently the record is 5 seconds!
